Safety and disengageable couplings

Safety couplings, also called torque limiter couplings, are used as torque limiters and as protection against overload. They provide a quick and reliable interruption of the drive component and the driven component if a torque exceeds a preset level. 

The safety couplings provide a quick and reliable interruption of the drive component and the driven component if a torque stop exceeds a preset level. This helps prevent damage and downtime. Safety couplings offered by BJ-Gear operate as overload breakaway devices and operate on a spring-loaded ball bearing principle. The safety couplings provide a rigid transmission without any backlash during normal operation, and the ball will be released from the bearings to disengage the drive line if the application torque surpasses a preset limit.

BJ-Gear offers safety couplings from German KBK Antriebstechnik and R+W Couplings.

From KBK we offer safety couplings with ball bearings, safety couplings with metal bellow as well as safety couplings with elastomer inserts as the compensating element. Safety couplings from KBK have a shaft diameter between 3-70 mm depending on model and a torque range of 3-1400 Nm. From R+W we offer safety couplings with torques up to 250 kNm and a shaft diameter up to 340 mm.

Safety and disengageable couplings

From Desch we are able to offer six different types of safety and disengageable couplings. They are ideal to compensate misalignments and have high thermal stability as well as insulating properties. They are easy to assemble and requires no maintenance.

Conax® type CM - friction clutch
  • Expanding symmetrical friction ring* between the cone-shaped metal discs, is divided into six segments held together by a tension spring
  • Axial displacements of the shafts are offset in the bore of the casing when the clutch is disengaged
  • The contact forces in the system cancel each other out, there is no axial loading of the machine bearings when the clutch is engaged.
Conax® type CR - slipping clutch 
  • Designed to protect machine components against destruction if overloading or blocking of the driven machine
  • Manufactured in two basic designs, depending on size
  • Sizes 0.5 to 25 are adjusted with a threaded ring,  sizes 50 to 200 are provided with disc spring assemblies
  • Accurate setting of the torque is possible
Planox® type PM - multi plate friction, mechanically actuated
  • Characterized in particular by the spring contact-pressure of the friction element
  • Due to this spring pressure, the peak torques are cut off during the switch-on process
  • Torque range from 150 Nm to 6,100 Nm
